Tropical Interference is a limited edition trilingual book (English, french and Portuguese) representing a comprehensive overview of MacLeay’s new media work (digital photography and award-winning video projects) undertaken between 2010 and 2023. The book reveals the impact that his time in Brazil has had on his chromatic choices, his social perspectives and the evolution and development of his image-making process.
In his preface to the book, Juan Esteves writes “Macleay dismantles the established proposition of mainstream photography, distancing himself from the mannerist idea attributed to an image, regardless of its eventual pictorial nature and however strong it may be due to the aesthetics it promotes - his authorial framework supported by abstractionism and in part, by his vast musical repertoire, being more ontological in the sense of what the Albert Einstein, the German physicist, violinist and pianist, by equating his activities, designated as improvisation … His repertoire, also sustained by political, ethnic, social and economic considerations as in his series Tribal Confusion (2012-2015), has the power to mix the figurative with the abstract in a form of oxymoron, resulting in an audacious graphic, typical of artistic nonconformity, a moment when the author settles down far from the art establishment, not only in what constitutes his core but in his techniques … The consistency and permanence of his reflective investigation distances his work from the banal and monotonous use of the photographic image. He is in harmony with the departure from neutrality, based, as he says, on the definition of the perception of what we are or of our conviction of what we are not …”

This book consists of a collection of both logical and irrational encounters and confrontations between a variety of narrative texts, poems and images that do not necessarily explore identical or even similar themes. Why this voluntary incoherence? Simply because life is not always coherent. For the author, life is a series of non-linear narratives and although they may sometimes seem futile, carefully exploited, the situations they create may constitute opportunities, renaissance moments capable of reigniting our creative spark and of provoking the development of innovative perspectives on almost any theme.
